Our Center in Takeo

headerbeeld

Our school/childrens' home and educational farm are located 'in the middle of nowhere', in one of the poorest regions of Cambodia. Our community has approximately 9000 inhabitants of which 70% is under 21 years. The population consists mainly of poor rice farmers. Many people live far below the poverty line (less than 50 cents per day). They live without electricity, have no running water and have limited access to medical care. Precisely in this poor region, where the economy was at a  complete standstill for decades and where no tourist comes, we strive to give the children a better future. We give these children education, clothing, food, shelter and we support the disadvantaged families with sustainable small-scale projects.

Education

Public education in Cambodia is seriously underperforming, teachers are inadequately trained. Children attend primary school just 4 hours per day and as a result of the many national holidays and other unclear reasons, classes are often suspended. During summer, schools close for 3 months because the children must work in the rice fields with their parents. In general, poor children attend only a few years of elementary education and their parents can not read and write.

Our School

In our school more than 200 children are taught English by Cambodian teachers and Dutch volunteers, obviouly free of cost for all children. In addition, classes about agriculture/livestock, creativity, sports and games, hygiene and general development are given. On a small scale we also provide computer classes.

Home

In our home 6 (orphan) children are living. They are lovingly taken care of by Mr. Phart and his wife, who live with their families next to the center. We also support many other (orphan) children who live with grandparents or other family members, because their parents have died or cannot take care of them. We give these children a monthly rice portion and provide them with a school uniform and a second-hand bike.

Community center

Our center also acts as community center for the community of approximately 9,000 inhabitants. For many young people, our center is a social meeting place. Our office is also located in this building and discussions with the villagers, commune leader and 11 village leaders also take place here. Our foundation supports the poorest families with various small-scale sustainable projects, such as the cow project, waterpump project and housing project. In addition, we offer support in setting up small-scale businesses, so that these people can become self-reliant and will not be dependent in length of days.

Educational farm

Our farm is located opposite of our center and is a model farm for educational purposes. Children and adults are given practice lessons on agriculture and livestock. Many poor people in the community live of a mediocre rice harvest. We want to teach these people how to create for themselves a vegetable garden and a small fish pond. We also provide them with information about the creation and keeping of livestock. Mr. Prat Chres is the manager of the farm and, being a retired trainer of CEDAC with international experience, he has a lot of know-how about agriculture.
